Nashville, Tennessee – Man Involved In ID Mix-Up Over Child Support

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Imagine being told you owe $50,000 in child support for children that aren’t yours.

That’s what’s happening to a Arrestor man.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services has thousands of names of parents that owe child support.  One of those names is Dennis Joe Brannon.

No one knows where he lives, but the state does know where Dennis K. Brannon lives.

They apparently want him pay for the other guy’s children.

“I’ve been married happily over 21 years and it’s just not possible that I’ve got kids in another county,” said Dennis K. Brannon of Murfreesboro.

Brannon has letters from the state demanding he pay child support.

“It’s in the sum of $50,000,” he said as he looked at the latest letter.

The letter came from the Attorney General’s office in Huntsville, Tenn., which is northeast of Knoxville.

The state is looking for Dennis Joe Brannon, but Dennis K. Brannon is receiving the threatening letters.

Initially, Brannon and his wife thought the mix-up was funny.

“We kind of made a running joke about this, but then it gets aggravating after awhile,” he said. “After two or three years, it’s time to get it straightened out.”

He claims he’s called several times.

“Well I’m sure if he’s been in contact with our office, we would do whatever we needed to do to rectify the situation and make sure we have the right person,” said Lori Jones, Assistant District Attorney of Child Support Division.

That isn’t the case, Brannon said.

“They told me I’d have to come up there and do a DNA test and prove I’m not the father of these children,” he said.

Why doesn’t he just give the state his Social Security number and clear up the entire matter?

“I did give them the last 4 digits of my Social Security number and they asked several times for my whole Social Security number,” he said.  “But for obvious reasons, I’m not going to give it. It’d be easy for them to change those numbers and say there, we got him.”

To make matters worse, he has three children ages 21, 17 and 14 and the Dennis Brannon sought by the state for child support has two children ages 16 and 14.

Several similarities have made for a child support mix-up a Murfreesboro family now wants resolved.

A DHS spokesperson said the state is investigating and if a problem has been made, it will be resolved.

The state is also concerned that the two children involved in this case apparently are not receiving the support they’re owed.  DHS said the children’s welfare is their No. 1 concern.

  1. Don’t expect this issue to be resolved in any reasonable amount of time. The man in subject is extremely lucky that he has only received threatening letters so far. There are many horror stories surrounding the TN DHS and child support services. A great many of them can be told by fathers who are actually involved in the child support system willingly.
I know for an absolute fact that thousands of dollars are often taken from individuals who cooperatively work through the DHS and pay child support. Often this money vanishes and neither parent nor child ever receive these monies.
Anyone dealing with these people with quickly find out that they are quick to tell you any line to get you off the phone but apparently and reasonable action is something they aren’t capable of.
The entire process seems to make very little sense and no one there seems to know what the other is doing or why. The most popular technique they use is apparently to just tell you what you want to hear as quickly as they can so they don’t have to deal with you. Their other approach is to be as rude and threatening as possible to detour you from asking to much of their time.
And good luck trying to find out where all the money from these mistakes goes or getting any of it back. You can literally try for years and get absolutely no where.
The best any lawyer could do for me was to tell me at least I wasn’t arrested for nothing… and yes that has happened to people.
There seems to be no way to set up an appointment to talk with anyone, there’s no way to file a complaint and not much anyone can do. They are the only department aside from the IRS that can intercept your income tax returns year after year, garnish your wages without you ever seeing a judge, and even have you arrested.
A little investigating and some personal dealings with this department would honestly scare when you know just what kind of power they can and will exercise.
I understand that this power is given to this department so that they may deal with deadbeat spouses who refuse to take care of their responsibilities. I as well as most Americans understand this and in ways encourage it. But to personally see how this department is ran and just how incompetent its employees are makes you wonder why there is no watchdog.

  2. Juvenile Court gave my kidnapped child to strangers, beat me, covered their bases and said they lost the papers. I showed them copies of case N7031 and the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children gave my son case # 1107248.
Several oddity persist covering for the two names-Shep Wilburn and Kenneth Turner.
Fearful for my life- I sent documents to Tennessee Health Related Board. Returned with black ink stating-working investigation. I was beaten, eleticuted and badly hurt, but I stayed in Memphis to fight for my son. If there are others who have information, please come forward.
