JACKSON - The executive director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services stands by his office’s allegation that Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson perpetrated food stamp fraud.
“I have personally reviewed this case, and we have followed the proper procedures,” said Donald Taylor Thursday.

Johnson, who was elected coroner last November, was arrested on Monday by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. After a Delta Democrat Times article revealed Johnson’s arrest, the coroner denied the charge and said she was “in shock.”
The Department of Human Services issued a press release Thursday confirming Johnson’s arrest.
Two other area women were also arrested Monday for food stamp fraud, the press release said: Jacqueline L. Smith, 35, of Metcalfe, and Shanekia S. Williams, 27, of Greenville. Johnson, 45, also lives in Greenville.
The Department of Human Services is currently examining food stamp cases in the area to check whether recipients are accurately disclosing information when they apply, according to the press release.
“These arrests are part of MDHS’ continued effort to rid the state of those who wish to misuse and abuse taxpayer dollars,” the press release quoted Taylor as saying.
The press release concluded with a warning from the MDHS fraud investigation unit that more arrests statewide are forthcoming.
